New Heavy

Theres a new chemical in town and its a heavy weight its going to enter the periodic table as the harviest element of all. The new element is temporarily called ununbium Latin for one-one two or 112, the number assined to the element. Scientist at the GSI helmholz center for heavy ion research in the southwest German city of darmstadt produced this element in 1996 by firing charged zinc atoms at lead target using a 120 meter particle accelerator.

The result was ununbium which is 227 times hevier than hydrogen and the heaviest element in the periodic table to date. Other scientists encountered some difficulty in recreating the element because of is quite unstable and last only milliseconds after it forms. This caused the delay from the of its discovery to its inclusion into the periodic table. But now its all system go as the international union of pure and applied chemistry has already approved 112’s.

Revolution

Nanotechnology is revolution that will affect many aspects of our lives in the distant future from the everyday products we use to the medical treatment we undergo. Nanotechnology seems like a difficult concept to grasp at the simplest it can be defined as the study and control of particles that fall within the nanometer (nm) scale. A nanometer is equivalent to one billionth of a meter. To put a nanometer size in visual perspective let’s measure things with it. The width of a strand of hair is about 80,000 to 100,000 nm, a red blood cell is 2,500 nm a pinhead is 1 million nm.

A nanoparticle or nanomaterial is a microscopic particle with at least one dimension less than 100 nm. It is still larger than an atom or molecule. An atom is 0.1 nm, now can you imagine how tiny one nanometer is? Types of nanometerials there are classificationsfor nano materials.

Scale to Weigh Atoms

Remember the old quetion about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin? Well even if nobody knows the answers to that one we can at least find out the weight of an atom. Scientist found that carbon nano tubes ultrathin fibers of carbon measuring only one atom thick can be used to determine the masses of atoms. Carbon nanotubes are a thousand times thinner than a human hair, a thousand times stronger than steel and are very good conductors of heat and electricity.

Since some carbon nanotubes can be semi conductors they can also function as a vibrating “string” that can measure the masses of an atom. If you are confused by this concept understand that a carbon nanotube is actually nothing more than a very htin and stiff piece of string that like all other strings can vibrate just as heavy string vibrate more slowly than light ones.

Nano Possibilities

Lets be frank. Nanotechnology ai an alien concept to many of us for those of uswho write about it, it takes tons of research just to be able to explain htese concepts in ways you would understand and make it interesting enough we hope for you think about. One of the problems lies in the fact that its hard to wrap our brains around the measures involved because they are so impossibly small. We’re told that a nanometer is a billionth of a meter and to help us understand that it is compared to a red blood cell a hair strand and a pinhead.

How about if i say that a single comma in the preceding sentence measures approximately half a million nanometers? Or that the nail on our pinkie is 10 million nanometers across? Or that shaquille O’neal is 2,160,000,000 nanometers tall, or that the convertion of one nanometer to one inch.

Meet Fake Meat

datePosted on 12:07, February 23rd, 2010 by admin

Some of us do not know that the meat that we buy from the nearest burger stand is not made of pure meat. The process of making fake meat is not as easy as it sounds. The soy protein arrives at the expert manufacturer in the form of dry powders. Since the protein is coiled and globular, and while the meat that we are used to everyday are fibrous, the process for the fake meat manufacturer would then be to change the proteins to make the finished product more like meat. After this, they denature the molecules so that they would open up and become more fibrous.

In the country, a more popular means of producing fake meat is trough the process of transforming wheat gluten. Wheat has far less protein than soy protein, but the stretchy nature and texture of wheat products are more easily transformed and shaped into the chewiness of meat that we are used to.

Made of Stardust

Stars are born when clouds of gas and dust combine. As these clouds become dense and heat up due to heavy gravity, their centers can became hotas 10 million degrees celsius. Because of this hydrogen and lighter elements like helium within the star fuse in a reaction called nucleosynthesis to became hevier elements like oxygen and iron. When the star finally dies it explodes in a supernova that sends this heavy element caross the universe . this later becomes a material in the creation of planets including our own planet earth, these elements that once came from stars iron, oxygen, and carbon now comprise the ingredients that combine to create life in our world.

In fact the iron in our blood and calcim in our bones come from heavy elements that originated from the stars. Researchers at the holifield radioactive ion beam facility have set out to prove this.

Just Add Water… Then Go

Can we add water to gasoline? Yes, this already possible. Thanks to the efforts of scientist, his 50-50 water and fuel mixture idea might be the solution to the oil crisis: the Alco diesel, Lan gas and Superbunker formula L (SBFL). His invention won the 1996 gold prize in the World Intellectual Property Organization for the most outstanding invention. Invention has several advantage, including: (1) lower fuel cost; (2) lower fuel consumption; (3) lower sulfur content (thus, more environment friendly); (4) has a unique lubricant thats protects and lengthens engine life: (5) lower flash point that enables easier startups and higher combustion power; and (6) runs 10 km per liter on the convention 6 km per liter diesel.

Even though the possibilities of products are infinite, and even though it was promising  enough to make the most eco-friendly country in the world, it was hard for him to convince people to convert from fossil fuel to the gasoline fuel.

Inventors Makes their Mark

Although the  may not be as advanced as First World countries in science and technology, that doesn’t stop from coming up with their own inventions despite the lacks of funding and support. At the 2008 nationals Inventors week, a wheelchair that also functions as a bed, toilet, and bath chair in addition to being a means of transport for the elderly and persons with dissabilities. This multipurpose chair was one of the finalist for the award given by the technology applications and promotios institute of the department of science and technology.

The inventors came up the idea for this chair after his brothers suffered as stroke and was paralized seeing the difficulty in caring for his invalid brothers he though a multipurposed wheelchair would makes things for his brother ang his caregivers. Unfortunately the invention is still not commercially available; it was patented only in October 2008.

Hubble Finds Carbon Dioxide on Remote Planet

For a long time, astronomers have wanted to find other life forms in faraway planets. Although this is still considered as science fiction scientist have recently become excited when the hubble space telescope discovered carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of an exoplanet. This jupiter sized planet called HD 189733b is 63 light years away and much too hot to support any form of life. However the mere discovery of carbon dioxide in atmospher es outside earth is already a fantastic achievement for astronomy.

What this discovery signifies is that there is further chance of discovering other planets in the future that migth have carbon dioxide and other earth like qualities those that may be able to support intelligent life. In early 2008 hubble found methane in the planets  atmosphere. Also previous observation of HD 189733b by hubble and spitzer space telescope found water vapor.

Herbi Plast

Gauzes help flesh wounds to respire, absorb bodily fluids, and hasten the healing of wounds. Antiseptics protect flesh wound from further infection. However, there are very few types of gauzes that contain antiseptic properties and even fewer coagulant properties. This study aimed to produce an anti bacterial oinment using Cassia alata L. And the coagulant properties of Tabernaemontana pandacaqui combined with Musa sapientum gauze. The test plants were subjected to phytochemical analysis, microbial assay and bleeding test on giinea pigs. Result show that Staphyloccocus aureas showed a man zone of inhibition of 12.33 mm on the cassia alata L. extract.

Bleeding test showed an average 3.01 minutes before bleeding stopped. ANOVA test showed no significant difference on the effectiveness of  herbi plast and commercial gauze and antiseptic as first aid treatment for wounds. It also proved the effectiveness of the antibacterial and coagulant properties of the herbi plast ointment as represented by the microbial index result and bleeding test.
